On The Road To Wallington

17th August 2022

Wallington Road has been in the news recently, not only for the returning Merlin but also for up to 9 Wheatears  and 4 Whinchats so time for a quick visit before the storms arrive, because it is not a place to get caught out in heavy rain. The first stop at the metal gates produced just a single Wheatear which, despite being in an open field, was amazingly obliging.

Then a quick dash into the furrows and re-appeared with a Ground Beetle.

Next stop was the Bygrave footpath which was eerily quiet at first until I eventually spotted a single Whinchat along the hedgerow. Unfortunately the moment was short-lived as a Sparrowhawk with prey buzzed the hedge causing the Whinchat to dive for cover. Eventually it re-appeared on top of its favourite bramble and I was able to get some shots.

If only all birds were as cooperative as the ones along Wallington Road!!!
