Lock-down Adventure No 2 - In Search of Spring Flowers

4th April 2020

It's starting to warm up now so time to take the camera on our daily exercise walk across the fields. Right outside our gate was a wonderful display of both White and Red Dead-nettles, growing amongst the grasses and brambles.

The first Dandelions were starting to appear but so far in very small numbers. They used to be picked to make Dandelion wine but the traditional date for picking the flowers was on St George's Day the 23rd April which is still a long way off.

Lesser Celandines, the harbinger of Spring, were plentiful in the wood and shone beautifully against the glossy dark green of their leaves.

Another early Spring flower is Greater Stitchwort, also known as Soldier's Buttons, which can be found at this time of year in most hedgerows.

But my favourite today was the carpet of Common Field Speedwell right outside our back gate, with its slightly paler lower petal. The flower on the right is obviously twisted round by 90 degrees.

Well, plenty of flowers but as usual at this time of year of a very limited variety, so it will be interesting to repeat the exercise in a few weeks time to see if any more have appeared.

Watch this space!!!
