Lock-down Adventure No 3 - Bee Fly, the Harbinger of Spring

4th April 2020

As soon as the clocks go forward and the days start to get warmer, the first insect you see in your garden will probably be the Dark-edged Bee Fly Bombylius major. With its furry body, patterned wings and long proboscis used for drinking nectar from plants, it certainly earns its name as the harbinger of Spring.

There were a few today nectaring on the Aubretia which cascades over the walls of the garden pond and I was able to spend an hour or so waiting for them to settle long enough for some shots.

What a wonderful way to spend an hour!!
