Lock-down Adventure No 1 - Our First Honey Bee of the Year

26th March 2020

Well folks we are now in lock-down and I have run out of bird photos and bird blogs. But rather than look on the dark side lets view this as an opportunity to explore the garden and immediate surrounds and see if we can improve our photographic diversity.

Well today it was sunny and so I ventured out into the garden looking for suitable candidates to photograph. The pond was obviously warming up and the fish were starting to venture towards the surface. They were clearly self-isolating but hadn't grasped the idea of social distancing.

The Spring flowers were in bloom with plenty of daffodils and a bank of Aubretia cascading down the wall by the pond.

However, the plants that caught my eye were some Skimmias which were in flower and had attracted a bee. This was a worker Honey Bee (thanks to Simon Knott for the ID) and was busy nectaring on the flowers. Just look at those hairs on the eyes.

In anticipation of more bee photographs over the coming weeks I have bought myself a DIY bee guide, although I suspect that Simon will be getting a few more emails!
