A Great Reed Warbler at Ouse Fen

29th April 2025

A Great Reed Warbler arrived at Ouse Fen on the 25th April at exactly the same place as last year so presumably the same bird. As we approached the reed bed we could hear the bird singing from a fair distance away and joined the eight other hopefuls trying to get a view or some photographs.

The reed bed was on the edge of a river and not very wide, but the bird was keeping mainly to the outside edge so behind several reed stems and almost impossible to see for most of the time. It did appear in full view on one occasion but only for two seconds, not enough time to lift the camera. However, after a while I found the tiniest of tunnels through the Phrag stems and was able to grab a few record shots.

It then flew to the other side of the river where, although it was now 25 yards away, was in full view with the sun behind us so much more favourable.

That will do nicely.
