I pulled up in Amwell Lane, got out of the car and immediately heard the call of a Grey Wagtail. You can sometimes hear them flying along the New River, but this one was on the opposite side of the road in the horse paddock. The recent heavy rains had produced a small flood in the grassy section of the paddock and a juvenile Grey Wagtail was indeed making the most of the new food source.
It then flew to the other end of the paddock where a similar flood had formed in some piles of pony manure. This had the advantage of producing a superb dark backdrop to enhance the colours of the wagtail.
Better still, because small pools are very calm they produce some great reflection shots. There were three birds in all, each taking its turn in front of the camera.
Well that was all unexpected but it did save me a journey to the viewpoint.
