Great White Egrets at Abberton

30th August 2020

I arrived at Layer Breton causeway expecting to see a sprinkling of Common Sandpipers and Yellow Wagtails, but only a dozen or so Pied Wagtails were on display. It is clearly not a good idea to feed along the shore-line with the wind behind you.

And when Pied Wagtails bathe they really go for it!!

A lone Great Crested Grebe glided by but what was more interesting was the female Goldeneye that was feeding in the shallows. This is one of three that have spent the summer here when they should be on their breeding grounds.

A little Egret was putting on a display by the weir and showing its bright yellow feet.

But the stars of the show today were the 10 or so Great White Egrets that were spread around the reserve, many distant or under trees, but this one by the Layer de la Haye causeway came out and strutted its stuff. Although it is closer just look at the size difference compared with the Little Egret in the background.
