Lock-down Adventure No 11 - A Bit of Activity Round the Pond

7th May 2020

The pond is getting going now with more colour every day. The Marsh Marigolds are hanging on and the Water Hyacinths are still in full bloom. Some new additions are Herb Robert and a large patch of Bloody Cranesbill which the Honey Bees love.

Our next visitor was a hoverfly which, instead of settling on one of the many plants to provide a decent back-cloth, chose the recycling bin. Oh well, can't have it all. This is Myrathropa florea, a first for the garden.

Large Red Damselflies breed in the pond and are now starting to emerge so the pond has several specimens flying around either singly, in tandem (mating) or ovipositing (egg laying).

But the highlight today was the appearance of a Frog. For some reason Frogs don't seem to like our pond. I have introduced spawn, tadpoles and frogs and froglets have been produced, but then they disperse and very few return and don't breed. So not too sure what this one was doing!!
