The arrival of Waxwings has been slow this winter, but they are now venturing south and have at last reached Hertford. Some of the traditional sites with Rowan trees such as Tanner's Crescent and The Avenue have so far been ignored, but a flock of twelve have been commuting between Wickes car park and Merchants Drive off Mead Lane. The weather has been fairly gloomy of late so I waited for a sunny day before joining the throng of photographers to try and capture that all-important shot.
Down Mead Lane the birds were sitting high in some poplars between their occasional short raids on the berry-laden tree in Merchant Drive. They would only visit every 20-30 minutes and then only stay for 10-15 seconds so you had to be both prepared and patient. Over a few visits from the Waxwings I eventually managed to get the following shots.
What amazing birds!!!
