St Albans Peregrine Falcons - Part 2

20th June 2024

On my last visit on the 16th June the three chicks had left the nest and were running around out of sight on the walkway behind the parapet. When I got there just one youngster was perched on the parapet and that soon dropped down out of view and was not seen again during the time I was there. So I went back today in the hope that the youngsters were flying.

Today both adults were present and just sitting around on their favourite perches with little or no activity.

Even when you are an adult, perching on a narrow smooth ridge can have its problems,  especially when there are wind gusts.

Only two chicks were on show when I was there. This one was walking along the ridge of the nave and was getting very frustrated with this lightning conductor as it was stopping it walking the full length of the nave.

The other one was exercising its new-found wings on the turrets of the bell tower.

Be warned!!! This sequence is not a first flight but an enormous leap of faith from one turret to the next..................

.....................and safely down.

The adults enjoyed a spot of flying between hunting sorties, although no food was brought in.

But you also need eyes in the back of your head. Luckily I turned round just at the right time and managed to grab this one.

Looking forward to some flights from the juveniles.
