A Glossy Ibis and a Kingfisher in East Herts

17th October 2023

A Glossy Ibis had been present for the last couple of days on a flooded field at Stanstead Abbotts. Unfortunately when I got there there was no sign of it so I went to Rye Meads just in case it had gone there.

The Draper Hide was very quiet, not helped by the rising water levels. Even the Green Sandpipers had gone although one did fly in, land, had a quick look round and flew off again. In fact the only action was a Kingfisher which flew in and perched briefly on one of the perches provided allowing a few shots to be taken.

So back to the flooded field but still no sign, but then after about half an hour the bird flew in and started to feed on the mud.

What a fantastic bird to have on your doorstep.
