A Four Owl Day In The Fens

19th January 2023

A day out in The Fens with owls definitely on the agenda, although you can always rely on a strong supporting cast. With the flat landscape and the massive skies there is always something flying over like this small flock of Lapwing, and you are never far away from a Stonechat.

Even when you are moving from one site to another it is always worth keeping your eyes open for something unexpected like this 1000+ flock of Pink-footed Geese.

Kestrels and Buzzards are common throughout The Fens..................

......................although we don't always see Kingfishers on our visits.

So now for the owls. Well, by far the most tricky to photograph was the Barn Owl as although it appeared a few times, it was always flying away and into the sun with no opportunity for a better angle.

The Long-eared Owl was roosting deep in shade with the sun behind it, but when the sun went round it was possible to get some shots.

At least the Tawny Owl was on the right side of the sun and snuggled in tight to its nest hole and hardly moved the whole time.

But you can always rely on the Shorties to put on a display rather than sleeping for most of the day, not only providing some flight shots but in full sunshine.

And even some close-ups to finish off.

...............................and relax!!!

Well what a day, and next time we need to bring along a Little Owl to complete the set!!!
