30 years ago you had to go to Wales to see Red Kites, and then to the Chilterns after the re-introduction programme there in 1992. Now, in most places across the country, you only have to step out of your front door.
Our Hertford garden overlooks a field which most years is used for a hay crop, and when the hay is cut, turned and baled attracts Red Kites looking for a free lunch. Last year there were 9 kites quartering the field during the hay-making process, and this year it attracted a record 11 birds. So all I have to do now is to grab my camera and open the back gate.
Well, what a great way to spend a couple of hours and I am looking forward to the next hay cut in a couple of months time.
