A Peregrine Falcon at Rye Meads

15th August 2019

Grabbed a couple of hours to see whether there were any new arrivals on the Draper scrape at Rye Meads. There were five Green Sandpipers present but all had obviously fed well and were hunkered down under a Sallow on the far side. In fact the only active wader that came reasonably close to the hide was this Common Sandpiper.

The Common Terns had clearly started their departure to warmer climes and just a single adult flew in for a bath before flying to the bank for a preen and to dry off.

There were about 20 Black-headed Gulls loafing on the scrape and when they suddenly lifted into the air it was time to look skywards to try and spot the perceived danger. This didn't take long as an adult Peregrine Falcon appeared over the roof of the hide and circled the scrape.

It then quickly lost height and buzzed the scrape, skimming low across the expanses of Water Mint.

It did land on the ground for a few seconds before lifting off once more and disappearing over the bank.

WOW!! That made the impromptu visit worthwhile.
