A Water Vole at Rainham Marshes

13th August 2019

Rainham Marshes was still very quiet bearing in mind that it is now mid-August and migration should be underway. No sight or sound of any beardies at the Dragonfly Pools, so when I got round to the Bomb Crater Pond I sat down on the seat to see whether the terrapin or the Water Vole would appear.

Certainly no sign of the terrapin, but after a few minutes a rustling of reeds on the far side gave away the presence of the Water Vole that was munching away deep inside shade. Although it was a sunny day, photographing in these dark conditions required extreme measures and for the benefit of any photographers out there, whilst most of the photos were taken at ISO-5000, some were taken at ISO-10000.

Anyway it seemed to work and was definitely better than nothing.

Over the years I have formed the opinion that Water Voles have very poor eyesight but very good hearing. I was only about 10 yards away from the vole but it seemed quite happy munching away on its reeds. The only time it looked up was when the camera shutter went and it would stare at the seat assessing the danger.

In fact, it quite obviously totally unaware of my presence as the one time it got into the water it swam straight at me!!

Wow, that day ended well!!!!

Also nice to share the experience and have a chat with Yoka and her husband.
