Studio Shoots at Lynford Arboretum

10th December 2018

Today a visit to Lynford Arboretum to see what was on offer. The forecast was for a bright sunny day, but as is frequently the case these days the forecast was totally wrong and was mainly a tug-of-war between whether the cloud was going to be light grey or dark grey. As a result the ISO was wortking overtime and was predominantly stuck on 5000.

The first stop was the feeding station next to the new holiday chalets. Plenty of food on the ground attracting the usual suspects but good to see up to five Bramblings amongst them.

So now for the first of the studio shoots, the magic post. This is a post by the bridge next to the lake where the top of the post is rotten. Some kind person keeps it topped up with food for the birds which today seemed to be suet-based. No need for a hide here, just stand about 6 yards away and wait. First up was a female Blackbird and a Robin.

A female Great Spotted Woodpecker was a bit of a surprise, not because they came to food but just the first time I have seen them at the magic post. This was followed by a male Chaffinch.

Not surprisingly there was a queue of tits, including not only Blue, Great and Coal, but also the rarer Marsh Tit, but luckily the latter is very common at Lynford.

And last but not least the colourful Nuthatch which must of been stashing it way judging by the amount it took.

They are also very messy eaters as can be seen here by the amount of food being thrown about.

The second studio shoot was a pile of lichen-covered branches laid on seed on one of the concrete bridge pillars. It attracted mainly tits but allowed some photos to be taken in a more natural setting.

Well the rest of the site was quiet, but it did provide a few hours of entertainment on a rather dull and dreary day.
