A Shore Lark on East Mersea

13th December 2018

On the 12th December Dougal Urquart found a Shore Lark on Stone Point at Cudmore Grove, East Mersea. This was a significant find as the last record of a Shore Lark on Mersea was in late 2010, so let us hope it is still there. On the beach on the way to The Point the usual Sanderlings and Turnstones were running around looking for morsels washed up on the beach.

Once on Stone Point our pace slowed as we started to scan the sward and the tidewrack for the Shore Lark. A curious Common Seal was trying to work out what we were up to.

Our search was not helped by the Sky Larks that were also scurrying around in the grass and sending off a few false alarms.

Luckily for us Glen Moore and Simon Patient were already on the scene and had located the Shore Lark, although at this point in time it was partially hidden in the grass or behind the brow of the tidewrack. However, it did eventually move to an open area on the beach allowing a number of shots to be taken, and even better the sun came out.

What a fantastic bird and my first for Mersea as I didn't buy my first camera until 2011.
