Down on the Beach at Walton-on-the-Naze

10th October 2018

The original objective of coming here was to find the elusive Yellow-browed Warbler. There had been two yesterday and as it turns out two the day after, but none today despite a thorough search by ourselves, Darrell Stile and Colin Mackenzie-Grieve. So on to the beach.

It was a particularly high tide so would take quite a while for any mud to appear, so lets just settle down and enjoy the view. There were a few fly-bys including this 1st winter Mediterranean Gull and Sandwich Tern.

After an hour or so waders started pouring out of the roost including Dunlin, Ringed Plover and Sanderling.

The first bird out on the newly-emerged mud was this Grey Plover sporting its winter plumage.

Next on the scene were some Ringed Plovers, unusually favouring the seaweed-covered rocks.

Sanderlings and the occasional Dunlin also appeared, the former looking resplendent in the autumn sunshine.

But the stars of the show today were the two Harbour Seals which came over to see what we were up to. Is there a better way to spend a sunny afternoon than sitting on a beach in Essex and letting the wildlife come to you?
