A Day with the Ospreys at Rutland Water

2nd July 2018

The Manton Bay chicks have now fledged so time for our annual pilgrimage to Rutland Water. In front of the hide the warm-up act was already assembled including these Black-headed Gulls, Common Terns, Grey-lag Geese, Lapwings and Mute Swans, but straight on to the main act.

There was still plenty of activity around the nest, with the top photo showing one of the chicks stretching its wings.

And luckily today there was quite a lot of flight activity, initially on the far bank by the trees.............

..............but then one of the adults decided to hover whilst looking for fish just to the west of the hide.

Also quite a lot of flight action low over the water but today I witnessed something I have never seen before. Both adults and juveniles were flying low and then ditching in the lake, pausing a few seconds and then taking off. They certainly weren't fishing, possibly washing, but it was carried out several times during the day.

But the highlight today was when one of the Ospreys intercepted a Buzzard near the nest site. An exciting dog-fight ensued with the Buzzard eventuall conceding to its larger opponent and flew into the distance.

Well, yet another action-packed visit to Rutland and I have had my Osprey fix until the same time next year.
