A Quick Jaunt Round South Cambs and North Herts 27th May

27th May 2018

The weather turned out better than forecast so a quick jaunt round the local area to see what was about. I started in Cambridgeshire to check on the progress of the Marsh Harriers. The female only put in a brief performance with just a 30 yard hop across the tops of the reeds, but the male was a bit more cooperative.

I managed to find Spotted Flycatchers at two different sites in Wallington, but both extremely high in the trees and therefore no chance of any photos. However the Sandon birds, although fairly elusive, did at least perch in the lower branches and were quite happy to sit just 10 yards away.

But the stars of the show today were the House Martins that were making the most of a muddy puddle to gather mud for their nests. I tried photographing House Martins at Walton-on-the-Naze in a similar situation last week, but they wouldn't come within 20 yards. However, these birds were a lot more trusting.

Just look at the size of those louseflies on the birds in the last two photos!!

Just goes to show how rewarding a few hours in your local area can be.
