Cavenham Heath

5th July 2025

After a very successful morning at Lakenheath Fen, time for a visit to Cavenham Heath to see if any Stone Curlews were on view. Thinking back to the empty car park at Lakenheath, it was bit disconcerting that there wasn't a single car along the track. And it was indeed very quiet apart from a nearby Sky Lark singing. After a long search I still couldn't find it and then realised it was singing from the ground.

Another site speciality, the Stonechat, then performed and I had forgotten just how much brighter they are in summer. as most of my photographs of them are taken in winter.

And the Stone Curlews? Well, I scanned the normal brow of the hill as usual and not a sign of a single bird, possibly just one of a couple of occasions where I have failed to see one here. It was a fairly strong easterly wind and therefore I suspect they were hunkered down on the far side of the clumps of heather.

Then I heard a few birds calling and one emerged from cover to see what the fuss was all about.

Mission accomplished!!!
