Common Cranes at Ouse Fen

25th June 2025

After a morning with the harriers we moved on to Ouse Fen in the hope of photographing some Bitterns during their food flights. We did indeed see 7-8 flights but all very distant and very low due to the wind, so no photographs today. There were however a couple of Great White Egrets present that would occasionally waft across the reed beds.

But the stars of the show today were the cranes that were very active and performed several fly-pasts .

And luck was on our side today as they were feeding in the only small clearing visible in the reed bed.

And to finish off I tried to compose this photo of a male Reed Bunting perched on a Phragmites head, only to realise when I got home that it had been photo-bombed by a Harlequin Ladybird!!!
