A Slavonian Grebe at Hanningfield Reservoir

13th November 2024

After a great morning at Mersea Island time to move on the Hannigfield Reservoir for the Slavonian Grebe, but first a quick tea break at Aberton. It was very quiet with not even a sign of the recent Goosanders and Goldeneyes so had to make do with a Great White Egret and a drake Pintail on the east side of the Layer de la Haye causeway.

The egret was a bit distant but was well illuminated by the afternoon sun. So glad these are regulars now.

The drake Pintail had ben having a bath and was now preening.........................

..........................but then went back to bathing.

Now on to Hanningfield to try and find a small Slavonian Grebe on a huge reservoir. Shouldn't have worried because there weren't too many birds around and it was found after about five seconds of scanning, albeit a fair way out.

Definitely a walk-up job. Why can't it always be this easy?
