A Purple Sandpiper at Holland Haven

20th November 2024

After a successful morning at Mistley time for a visit to Holland Haven to see if we could find the 1-2 Purple Sandpipers that have been there over the last couple of weeks. We had only just stepped out of the car when we were welcomed by a Carrion Crow esscorting a Buzzard off its territory.

As we were approaching the jetty a pair of Stonechats were flitting around on the slope. The male was very obliging and sat up on the vegetation for some photos whereas the female kept her distance and insisted on perching on metal poles.

Down by the jetty our friend and local patch birder Mike O'Hanlon was already watching a Purple Sandpiper at the far end of the jetty. Luckily the jetty is on a slight slope so as the tide came in it would cover the far end of the jetty first thereby pushing the sandpiper closer to shore. It worked and within 10 minutes the bird was just 15 yards away. I love it when a plan comes together!!!

But what I love about Purple Sandpipers is that they often feed next to crashing waves and sometimes get caught out by a wave slightly higher than usual causing them to lift into the air like an Irish dancer.

Wonderful!!!!
