A Couple of Hours with the Kingfishers at Rye Meads

24th March 2022

There are two pairs of Kingfishers at Rye Meads, one at the Draper Hide and the other at the Kingfisher Hide. Although a lot of action had been reported at the Draper Hide in the morning, this afternoon it was very quiet so we moved on to the Kingfisher Hide.

Here the female was present all of the time, but mostly hidden in the bushes with the occasional foray into the nest hole and then the perches giving a few opportunities for some shots. The male only made one appearance all the time we were there so currently there is no indication that incubation has started.

Most of the time the female was keeping to the furthest post...............

..................but did on one occasion settle on some twigs next to the nest hole...............

.......................and eventually tried one of the nearer perches.

Most of the time the Kingfishers leave the nest site and go to another part of the reserve to fish, but today she dived from the furthest post and caught a fish and is seen here flying back to the perch.

Lets hope they are as successful this year as they have been in previous years.
