8th August 2020
On Saturday 8th August Jane Free reported a Redstart that she had found on her local patch at Stanstead Innings. I decided to avoid the weekend crowds and heat and opted to pop down there just after 4pm and had the whole place to myself. All I had to do now was to find the bird.
I knew that it was associating with the car park and the only photo that I had seen was one taken by Ron Cousins of the bird sitting on one of the posts. No sign of the bird here but there was something flitting around under the browse-line of a Hawthorn just outside the car park. This was it!!
I took up position the other side of the bush, put the camera on the tripod and waited. The bird was skulking in the bush and would occasionally foray on to the bare ground nearby to pick up insects. Unfortunately it would stay hidden for up to 10 minutes at a time, so patience was the name of the game.
It was so quick that I only managed to get one shot of it on the ground, but it did pose in the open on a nearby willow.
But by far the best shots were when it perched high up in the Hawthorn, and the leaves and berries provided such a wonderful backdrop.
Well, that was unexpected. Once again thanks to Jane for finding the bird and getting news out so quickly, and also nice to meet Chris Gibson.
