A Common Sandpiper at Amwell

15th August 2020

A quick trip to Amwell between the showers to see if the long-staying Temmincks Stint had plucked up courage to come a bit closer, and to spend a bit of time at the Bittern Pool. Well, it didn't quite go according to plan as the Temmincks had moved to the further other half of the island and the Bittern was decidedly noticeable by its absence. Don't you just hate it when a plan doesn't come together?

Anyway back at the viewpoint one of the three Common Sandpipers present had flown in and was feeding on the invasive bright green New Zealand Pygmyweed Crassula helmsii that has unfortunately established itself over much of the site. On the bright side it did seem to be providing the sandpiper with a considerable amount of food.

Actually the habitat had been improved by the puddling caused by the drove of pigs present, that is up to the point they formed their rather successful Escape Committee!!!
