Another gloomy day but a window of opportunity was forecast for the afternoon, so time for a quick visit to Amwell. The Whitethroat was having a break from singing for a preen, but possibly looked tidier before it started.
Up at the viewpoint a pair of Stock Doves were searching for seeds on the scrape. They are frequent visitors but normally just pop in for a quick drink and off again in a few seconds so nice to see them stay for a while. The three Ringed Plovers from the last visit had been replaced by three Little Ringed Plovers.
When these two Little Egrets flew in I thought they were fighting, but closer inspection revealed that it was a juvenile bird on the right begging for food from the adult on the left. Eventually the adult broke loose and was then chased by yet another youngster.
But the star of the show today was the Common Tern that flew quite close to the viewpoint and as if by appointment hovered for a few seconds allowing a rattle of shots to be taken.
Well that was an entertaining couple of hours and now time to head home before the rain arrives.
