A Christmas Eve Visit to Lemsford Springs

24th December 2018

The last day before a few days of eating and drinking so time for a couple of hours at Lemsford Springs. Even The Springs were quiet due to the unseasonally mild weather and for the third visit in a row, no sight or sound of a Kingfisher. A usually resident Grey Wagtail did eventually put in an appearance, but only briefly.

A Little Egret was feeding along the margins and was joined by a second colour-ringed bird which had been caught and ringed here earlier in the year.

But the stars of the show here, the Lemsford key species, were the Green Sandpipers which have been studied here for many years. There were four birds present today and before April all will be caught and fitted with a satellite tracker so that their movements can be monitored on their breeding grounds up in the Arctic Circle. How amazing is that?

Time for a bit of preening.
