Off today to hopefully see the Red-necked Grebe which has been showing well at Ferry Meadows in Peterborough. The bird was frequenting Overton Lake which is just north-east of the visitor centre, and we settled down to scan the vast area of water to try and pick out the Red-necked from the numerous Great Crested Grebes. The light at this point was fantastic and illuminated this young Cormorant very well.
After a few minutes the Red-necked was located in the middle of the lake moving very slowly towards a large island in front of us. Then, instead of swimming in front of the island it disappeared behind, eventually emerging at the other end right in front of a landing stage. A brisk walk round the end of the lake enabled us to photograph the bird at just a few feet range before it made off round its circuit again.
I only wish that all bird photography was this easy.
