A Kingfisher at Lemsford Springs

19th February 2024

This is my first visit to this lovely reserve in the new year and not too surprising to see seven Green Sandpipers spread out amongst the watercress. However, there was not a lot else, just a couple of Little Egrets, a distant Grey Wagtail, no Snipe and not even a single duck!! Apparently the recent heavy rains have provided lots more wetland habitats in the local area which have temporarily attracted some of the usual suspects away from the site.

However, the sandpipers always put on a good show and I managed to get these shots.

Kingfishers can often be seen or heard when they flash past on the River Lea, but it is now a few years since I have seen one on the reserve. Unfortunately this one decided to perch on the tree opposite, some 30 yards away, rather than the strategically placed perch in front of the hide.

It then flew even further away to the edge of the reed bed.

Oh well, mustn't grumble!!!
