Waxwings in Hertford

15th December 2023

Waxwings come from Scandinavia and during the winter months feed mainly on Rowan berries. In some winters the berries are in short supply and are soon eaten by the birds which causes them to migrate south in search of more berries. These years are called invasion years and during these years the birds sometimes reach as far south as Southern England. The last appearance of Waxwings in Hertford was in January 2019 when 12 birds were commuting from Wickes car park to the industrial units at Merchant Drive off Mead Lane. Rowan trees are often planted in retail and industrial unit car parks which is why Waxwings often appear there.

This year three birds were spotted in the Wickes car park on the 14th December but the next day there were only two and I managed to get these shots on a rather gloomy afternoon.

Rowan berries come in various colours but pink ones appear to be their favourite and are normally eaten first.

Waxwings get their name from the beads of what looks like red sealing wax on their wings.

What fabulous birds.
