All Change at Fowlmere

27th March 2023

Thought I'd try and grab a few hours of rare sunshine before what is forecst to be weeks of gloom so off to Fowlmere. Sadly the clouds started rolling in as I was walking down to the Reed Bed Hide but hopefully there would be a few breaks during the afternoon. The harriers are most active in the mornings so it wasn't too surprising that the male only managed a couple of circuits and the female was keeping a low profile and only managed one flight collecting nest material.

It was great seeing the male Reed Bunting back in its favourite Elder bush right in front of the hide and no doubt many more pairs will be following suit and moving back on to the reserve over the next few weeks.

There had also been a large influx of Chiffchaffs which seemed to be singing from the tops of every other Sallow, but no Willow Warblers yet.

So the winter/summer changeover has started with several new arrivals, but the winter visitors are still hanging on especially when there is an abundance of seeds remaining, like these Siskins in the Alders by the Spring Hide. They were quite tricky to photograph as they were sillouetted high in the Alders in fairly pure light but I did manage to grab some shots of these most beautiful acrobatic birds

Well they won't be here much longer so make the most of them!!!
