A Meal Fit for a Red Kite

2nd September 2022

During a trip to Pitstone Hill we were following a sheep path along the north-west slope looking for migrants amongst the bushes. In the field below I spotted what appeared to be a sheep carcass so I picked up my bins for a closer look. It was indeed a sheep carcass and standing next to it was a Red Kite.

The carcass had obviously been there for some time as a lot of the wool had already been removed by kites, buzzards and possibly foxes, but this kite seemed to have had its fill as it was quite inactive and just staring round.

It then hopped on top of the carcass, but apparently more for a better view rather than to feed.

At that point it took to the air, carried out a couple of laps of the hillside and disappeared over the hill.

Amazing birds!!!
