Black Terns at Amwell

31st August 2021

Early in the morning Jane Free posted on the Herts Bird Club website that there were two juvenile Black Terns at Amwell so no time to lose. I arrived at the viewpoint and could see both terns, but they were fairly distant for most of the time and made worse by the appalling light. Apart from that everything was fine.

After a while it brightened up a tad and the next two hours were spent trying to photograph these fast-moving, diving terns on the occasions that they came within 30 yards of the shore. Here is a selection of the results.

After two hours of continuous flight they eventually decided to have a rest and landed on the posts in front of the viewpoint.

And not too surprisingly, despite all the posts available, they both wanted to land on the same post!!

Well, what a fantastic morning and a special thanks to Jane for getting the news out so quickly.
