8th July 2021
I had gone to Abberton Reservoir to try and photograph the Red-necked Grebe that had been there since the 29th June. Unfortunately from the various reports it was spending most of its time mid-way between the two causeways which are 1600 yards apart!! Therefore it was just a matter of waiting and hoping that at some stage it would come close enough for some photos.
In the morning it was behaving as expected and staying right out in the middle, on the edge of binocular range. I returned in the afternoon and, after sitting out a rather prolonged rain shower in the comfort of the car, I spotted it about 200 yards from the Layer Breton causeway. Well, at least I would get a record shot.
Then for some reason it started swimming quite purposefully towards the causeway...........
.................and got closer...........
....................and closer................
....................and closer...............
...............eventually coming to within 10 yards of the bank, and then proceeded to put on a display as if it had swum all that way for a photo-shoot.
Then when the show was over, it turned its back and swam back to its comfort zone mid-way between the causeways.
