A Short-eared Owl in the Sun

 2nd March 2021

It was a dull and dreary day with overcast skies although it was forecast to brighten up during the afternoon. The problem was that the forecast was changing by the hour and so it was just a case of waiting to see what happened. Then at about 3.30pm the sun poked through so I dashed down to King's Meads hoping for another glimpse of the owl.

As I was walking across Park Mead at 4.00pm I could see the owl already in flight which is extraordinary for this particular owl. It normally shows towards dusk when the light is fading and sometimes not at all, presumably because it doesn't fly until after dark.

It was fairly distant for most of the time mainly over Stockade Mead, but was wide-ranging with excursions over Park Mead and even Ware Park. However on a couple of occasions it did come closer allowing a few shots in the glorious sunshine.

On one occasion the owl hovered for a few seconds allowing a couple of action shots.

Why can't it always be this cooperative?
