I thought I would see if our Field Vole was still present so put some sunflower hearts at two places around the pond. No sign for a while but it did eventually sniff them out and allowed a few shots to be taken.
I have been photographing the vole for a couple of weeks now and although I feed in two places I have never seen more than one vole at a time so assumed it was single. However, looking through the photographs I noticed a difference. The first three photos all show a very short tail, only about 15% of the length of the body and head, whereas a Field Vole tail is normally about 30%
However on this photo the tail is clearly longer and darker even though it is partially hidden and is a more typically 30%.
The longer-tailed specimen was photographed 17 days after the short-tailed versions so it my be due to the tail growing, although the bodies of the voles that I have photographed have all been full-grown. So is it a growing tail or two voles?
