Short-eared Owls are fairly scarce winter visitors to Hertfordshire and therefore the bird that took up residence at Stagenhoe Bottom Farm just outside Whitwell on the 5th February was noteworthy and well worth a visit. When I arrived it was sitting in the middle of a field looking a bit lost.
It then flew a few lazy laps of the field, looking for voles as it went.
It eventually perched on an electric fence and, in accordance with careful planning, the sun came out to illuminate the bird and particularly the eyes. Can't ask for more than that!!
