Barn Owl at Amwell

29th November 2019

A few hours spare this afternoon so off to Amwell to try and see and photograph the Bittern. When I arrived at the viewpoint the Bittern was showing at the edge of the reeds but far to the left, slightly obscured and in shade. Then after a few minutes it swam further left out of view and was never seen again. By way of compensation a Redwing was calling high in a tree above us.

I was starting to head homewards and had just got as far as the main viewpoint when Stuart Fox said that a Barn Owl was hunting over the meadow between the Lee Navigation and the railway. At first it was down the far end, about a quarter of a mile away, but then started hunting along the full length of the strip of land allowing some shots to be taken as it approached our end.

It was wonderful to see it go in for the kill a couple of times.

Then time for a rest.

But this is my favourite shot of all. What a poser!!!
