A Rough-legged Buzzard at Wells-next-the-Sea

22nd December 2019

A few hours to spend in North Norfolk so an ideal opportunity to try and find the Rough-legged Buzzard at Wells-next-the-Sea, but first let's try and locate some Pink-footed Geese. Their main feeding area is usually around the Docking/Burnham Market area so a slow toodle along the lanes seemed to be the best plan.

After going through Docking I tried the site at Beacon Hill, Burnham Market where the Lesser White-fronted Goose had been seen a few days earlier feeding with some Pink-feets, but so sign of either today. I then headed north towards the coast road and got quite excited when I rounded a bend and found a large flock of geese feeding right next to the road. I quickly parked up and grabbed the camera only to find that they were in fact Greylag Geese.

However a quick scan through the flock revealed a couple of interlopers, a Pink-footed Goose and an Egyptian Goose.

All was not lost as further along the coast road was a flock of several thousand Pink-feet with several more still arriving.

Finally I got to Wells so time to set up the tripod and wait for the Rough-legged Buzzard to appear. Scanning around the fields I found this Hare hunkered down in a rather bare field, so obviously relying on camouflage rather than being out of sight.

The buzzard soon showed but was always distant and tending to hug the sea wall which was 400 yards away. However, I did manage to get a few record shots of it perched on the ground and in various bushes................

.......................although the best shots I managed were probably when it went on a short flight.

I love photographing Rough-legged Buzzards, but why can't they all be as accommodating as the Holland Haven bird in 2015!!!
