Short-eared Owls on Valentine's Day

14th February 2019

A sunny day with only a slight breeze and therefore conditions are just right for a visit to Burwell Fen to try our luck with the Short-eared Owls. There were a minimum of four owls flying from about 3.30pm, but my photo opportunites fell into two distinct periods. My first was with the first owl flying when the sun was still reasonably high in the sky giving a good natural light. The bird perched for a while being launching itself providing some flight shots.

My second opportunity was a lot later, probably within 30 minutes of sunset, and now the sun was low in the sky and casting a golden glow on the landscape - the Golden Hour.

What a remarkable difference in the lighting conditions.
