White-fronted Geese at Amwell

28th December 2018

On Boxing Day three White-fronted Geese were found at Amwell, a fairly unusual record for the site. They were still there on the 28th so time for a visit now that the sun had decided to come out despite the Met Office forecast.

There were large numbers of geese on the pit including the resident Greylag and Canada Geese.

There were also a couple of Barnacle Geese which had presumably strayed from one of the local feral popluations.

But the main quarry today were the White-fronted Geese, an adult and two juveniles, which were fortunately preening on a spit right in front of the viewpoint.

And the Bittern? Yes, that was there, standing in the usual 10 yards of reed bed in the north-eastern corner.
