Two MEGAs in East Hertfordshire on the Same Day

11th January 2018

Up to now it has been a fairly quiet winter in East Herts with very few birds of note, but that was all about to change today with both Yellow-browed Warbler and two Cattle Egrets reported. The Yellow-browed was found by Rupert Evershed at Tyttehanger Gravel Pits freqenting an area of willows by the bridge over the conveyor belt.

Luckily it seemed to be quite loyal to this site and was therefore showing quite frequently, albeit often  partially obscured by twigs. Sadly I didn't manage to get any close-up shots, just a distant record shot.

The two Cattle Egrets in Cheshunt proved to be far more difficult to track down. They were visiting a small recreation ground which was totally enclosed by a large housing estate and the difficulty was finding a way in. Once the entrance had been located the two egrets were soon found in what must be a most bizarre setting.

They appeared to be walking around on the mown field searching for worms, but when disturbed flew up on the the fences of the surrounding gardens demonstrating the urban environment that they were favouring. What a garden tick!!!

I wonder what will be the next MEGA to turn up in East Hertfordshire?
