Wheatears and a Redstart at Holland Haven

20th August 2018

After a very successful day at Walton-on-the-Naze, time for a quick call into Holland Haven to see if we can track down the Redstart reported there. As we walked down the track from the car park the first bird we encountered was a Kestrel that was hovering over the path. I had only just raised my camera and it banked away giving a nice shot of the underside.

Down on the beach on the huge rocks that make up the sea defences were five Wheatears, the most I have seen in one place this autumn. A little bit skittish, but with a little patience it was possible to get some reasonable shots.

But the star today, which was eventually found on the wire fence on the track to the car park, was the stunning female-type Redstart.

Such a beautifil bird which showed up well in the sun against a dark background.
