Hobbys and Bitterns at Lakenheath Fen

15th May 2018

There had been reports of a fair amount of Bittern activity at Lakenheath so time for a second visit to try our luck with both Bitterns and Hobbys. While the morning was warming up I took the opportunity to peer into the vegetaion to try and find some resting dragonflies. No Hairy Dragonflies this time, but I did manage to find a freshy emerged Four-spotted Chaser and a female Scarce Chaser, the latter being the first for the year on the reserve.

By now the day was warming up and the Hobbys, up to five along the track opposite the Mere Hide, were now coming lower and hunting at tree-top level allowing some shots to be taken.

Occasionally one would stop for a rest on one of the nearby Silver Birches.

But the stars of the show today were the Bitterns, which were indeed fairly active and flying from one reed-bed to another. What was even better was they that were flying high above the reeds allowing uninterrupted views.

What a fantastic day!!!
