A Day with the Marsh Harriers

26th April 2018

It is the fourth week in April now so time to go and see how the Marsh Harriers are getting on with their nesting preparations. Most of the activity at this time of the year features the male which builds a nest to try and attract the female, whilst the female spends her time hunting and just sitting around. There are normally no food passes until she is sitting on eggs. So as a result the only bird on show today was the male. The female did fly in mid-morning, but after a couple of laps of the reed bed landed in her favourite spot and was never seen again that day. Here are some shots of the male.

The male had presumably been hunting at first light, as the rest of his time until mid-morning was spent collecting reeds for the nest. A lovely day spent with these incredible birds and I can't wait to return when the young are flying.

What absolutely stunning birds!!!
