A Snow Bunting at Wilstone Reservoir

19th November 2017

In late afternoon on the 18th November a Snow Bunting was found at Wilstone Reservoir. I had photographed Snow Buntings twice previously in Hertfordshie, the first at Bishop's Stortford on the 6th November 2011, and the second at Startops Reservoir on the 23rd January 2012. I therefore headed off to Wilstone in the hope of a hat-rick.

As we drew into the car park it was fairly clear where the bird was, judging by the handful of photographers up on th bank, holding their cameras almost vertically. Indeed the bird was feeding on Water Chickweed seeds on the shore immediately below the bank and at times was coming to within eight feet and just one foot away from the base of the bank making photography quite difficult at times. Anyway, with a little patience all concerned managed to get some amazing photos of this cracking bird, and here is a selection of my shots.

When photographing birds like this I am always looking to get that something slightly different, a flight or action shot, and this bird duly obliged with a couple of wing stretches allowing all the detail of the plumage to be seen. Magic!!
